SUBANG JAYA: Eighteen-year-old Low Yee Ming showed guts and determination to unofficially break the Guinness World Records for “The Greatest Distance Travelled Balancing A Football On The Head” recently.

Yee Ming set aside his disappointment after failing in his first attempt on Aug 18 and walked 11.1km three days later to unofficially break the record held by Abraham Munoz from the United States.

Munoz had recorded a distance of 4.4km on Aug 9.

The teenager, with the help of his 50-year-old businessman father, Sam Low, is in the process of submitting the relevant documents for verification and endorsement by the Guinness World Records.

The verification process is expected to take about five weeks.

The Sports Science diploma holder from USJ 5 also broke his own record in the Malaysia Book of Records which he had achieved when he completed 34 100m stretches during his first attempt.

Yee Ming was heart-broken after his first attempt was foiled by strong winds with just 11 more 100m stretches to go to break Munoz’s record.

However, with the support of his family, especially his father who acted as a navigator to ensure he did not stray off the course, Yee Ming was determined to fulfil his quest for a world record.

Yee Ming took two hours, 38 minutes and 44 seconds for his record-breaking feat at the Subang Jaya Municipal Council Athletic Track. His achievement was witnessed by Olympic Council secretary-general Datuk Sieh Kok Chi and Asia International Basketball Federation secretary-general Datuk Yeoh Choo Hock. The former student of the Manchester Metropolitan University Football Academy, in partnership with Newcastle Under Lyme College, said after the earlier defeat he had challenged himself to break the record.

He described it as a gift to Malaysians in conjunction with the 52nd Merdeka celebrations.

Yee Ming, who began his second attempt at 7am, said the bright sunlight hurt his eyes and after the 30th stretch, he felt a strain on his neck and it was numb.

“On top of that, I was thirsty and my lips were extremely dry. I was delighted when I reached the 45th stretch, which meant I had officially beaten Munoz and the rest was a bonus for me. But I wanted to push myself and knew that I could go on further but I did not want to take it too far either.

“I listened to my body so I stopped at 111, which I felt was a nice number. I am happy to have gone this far and accomplished what I set out to do,” said a jubilant Yee Ming.

He also joked that the attempt took such a toll on him that at the 70th stretch, he secretly wished for the football to be blown off his forehead.
